This is Miranda Lambert's second major-label album and she has avoided the "sophomore slump." In fact, I think this album is even better than Kerosene. It seems like the songs are more personal this time around and I really like that fact.
In the first song, "Gunpowder and Lead," Miranda sings about a woman who seeks revenge on an abusive boyfriend. His fist is big but my gun is bigger" she sings. He might have thought he was a big tough man but she'll have the fatal last word. Continuing along with the revenge theme is "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend." She isn't letting her boyfriend get away with flaunting a new girl around in the bar so she's making a scene. With lines like "I started throwing things and I scared folks half to death" and "Didn't give it a second thought to be thrown in jail" you can imagine what happened.
One of my favorite songs from the album is "Dry Town," which was written by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. It's full-on twangin' and will get stuck in your head after only one listen. Miranda Lambert solely wrote the beautiful "Love Letters," which is another favorite of mine. Her voice is so pretty when she sings slower songs and this is a prime example of how she is a versatile songwriter. It's also one of many reasons you should get the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend album. Just when you thought Miranda's music couldn't get any better - it does.
