 Chely Wright
Single White Female

Single White Female - Chely Wright Single White Female is my first taste of Chely Wright's music. It is her fourth release, and first gold record. The title track is also Chely's first #1 single.

When I brought up the idea of doing a special "Women of Country" review feature to Trisha, Carrie and Jennifer, I wasn't sure which album I would review. However, as I thought back to the concert Chely gave in Las Vegas last November, I decided that Single White Female was going to be my choice.

The album is a nice mixture of fast-paced songs and ballads. The singles are really well-done, and the rest of the album is not what you'd call filler. The songs have that uniqueness that is Chely, and it's easy to see why this record is her most successful to date.

I can never listen to "She Went Out For Cigarettes" again without thinking of what Chely said before she sang it in concert. She said that every time she sang it, it really affected her mood. Indeed, the song does have a powerful story, and the video shows this quite well.

My favorite song would have to be "The Love That We Lost" which is a song Chely recorded twice. The ballad is haunting and sad. Listen to audio clips in .asf format of each of the versions.

Chely's music is hard to describe. It isn't what you'd call totally traditional, but it's not pop country either. I'd say she leans more to the traditional. No song on the album shows this more than the closing song, "Why Do I Still Want You," which sounds like something Patty Loveless would sing. Very pretty, and very country.
